Gives a good overview of the Procurement Cycle with concise explanations. Better suited for those new to Procurement and Supply Chain concepts than those working in the field or with a SCM background.

This book wasn't quite what I was looking for but would recommend it to someone who is trying to improve their general knowledge of Procurement either in the workplace or in academia.

Good and enjoyable for a wide range of readers

A quarter century ago I noticed that some of the graduate physics students in my university were carrying around copies of Scientific American. Armed with that clue, I dug out every article on the newly discovered fundamental particles. Within the space of a week of fairly easy reading I was able to acquire a good sense of what this subject was all about. These articles explained the basic stuff our professors assumed we must know (but most of us surely didn't).
Brannan, Esplen, and Gray's Geometry accomplish for math what those Scientific American articles did for physics: speaking at a level accessible to anyone with a good high school education, they bring the interested reader up to speed in affine, projective, hyperbolic, inversive, and spherical geometry. They provide the simple explanations, diagrams, and computational details you are assumed to know-but probably don't-when you take advanced courses in topology, differential geometry, algebraic geometry, Lie groups, and more. I wish I had had a book like this when I learned those subjects.
Individual chapters of about 50 pages focus on distinct geometries. Each one is written to be studied in the course of five evenings: a week or two of work apiece. Although they build sequentially, just about any of them can be read after mastering the basic ideas of projective geometry (chapter 3) and inversive geometry (chapter 5). This makes the latter part of the book relatively accessible even to the less-committed reader and an effective handbook for someone looking for just an overview and basic formulas.
The approach is surprisingly sophisticated. The authors do not shy away from introducing and using a little bit of group theory, even at the outset. (Scientific American, even in its heyday, never dared do that.) They present all geometries from a relatively modern point of view, as the study of the invariants of a transitive group of transformations on a set. Many explanations and proofs are based on exploiting properties of these transformations. This brings a welcome current of rigor and elegance to a somewhat static subject long relegated to out of date or sloppy authors (with the exception of a few standouts, such as Lang & Murrow's "Geometry").
One nice aspect is the authors' evident awareness of and appreciation for the history of mathematics. Marginal notes begin at Plato and wind up with Felix Klein's Erlangen program some 2300 years later. Although the text does not necessarily follow the historical development of geometry, its references to that development provide a nice context for the ideas. This is an approach that would improve the exposition of many math texts at all levels.
The authors are British and evidently write for students with slightly different backgrounds than American undergraduates. Obvious prerequisites are a mastery of algebra and a good high school course in Euclidean geometry. Synopses of the limited amounts of group theory and linear algebra needed appear in two brief appendices. However, readers had better be intuitively comfortable with matrix operations, including diagonalization and finding eigenspaces, because matrices and complex numbers are used throughout the book for performing computations and developing proofs. A knowledge of calculus is not needed. Indeed, calculus is not used in the first two-thirds of the book, appearing only briefly to derive a distance formula for hyperbolic geometry (a differential equation for the exponential map is derived and solved). During the last third of the book (the chapters on hyperbolic and spherical geometry), some basic familiarity with trigonometric functions and hyperbolic functions is assumed (cosh, sinh, tanh, and their inverses). Definitions of these functions are not routinely provided, but algebraic identities appear in marginal notes where they are needed.
Now for the quibbles. The book has lots of diagrams, but not enough of them. The problems are usually trivial, tending to ask for basic calculations to reinforce points in the text. The text itself does not go very deeply into any one geometry, being generally content with a few illustrative theorems. An opportunity exists here to create a set of gradually more challenging problems that would engage smarter or more sophisticated readers, as well as show the casual reader where the theories are headed.
This book is the work of three authors and it shows, to ill effect, in Chapter 6 ("non-euclidean geometry"). Until then, the text is remarkably clean and free of typographical and notational errors. This chapter contains some glaring errors. For example, a function s(z) is defined at the beginning of a proof on page 296, but the proof confusingly proceeds to refer to "s(0,c)", "s(a,b)", and so on.
The written-by-committee syndrome appears in subtler ways. There are few direct cross-references among the chapters on inversive, hyperbolic, and spherical geometry, despite the ample opportunities presented by the material. Techniques used in one chapter that would apply without change to similar situations in another are abandoned and replaced with entirely different techniques. Within the aberrant Chapter 6, some complex derivations could be replaced by much simpler proofs based on material earlier in the chapter.
The last chapter attempts to unify the preceding ones by exhibiting various geometries as sub-geometries of others. It would have been better to make the connections evident as the material was being developed. It is disappointing, too, that nothing in this book really hints at the truly interesting developments in geometry: differentiable manifolds, Lie groups, Cartan connections, complex variable theory, quaternion actions, and much more. Indeed, any possible hint seems willfully suppressed: the matrix groups in evidence, such as SL(2, R), SU(1,1, C), PSL(3, R), O(3), and so on, are always given unconventional names, for instance. Even where a connection is screaming out, it is not made: the function abstractly named "g" on pages 296-97 is the exponential map of differential geometry, for instance.
Despite these limitations, Brannan et al. is a good and enjoyable book for anyone from high school through first-year graduate level in mathematics.

A lovely Introduction to all kinds of Plane Geometries

This book gives a beautiful overview of geometry of 2 dimensions. All of the book is about many plane geometries I have heard of, but didn't really know. This book changed that.
The first chapter treats some basics about conics. The second chapter is on affine geometry. The third and fourth chapters are about projective geometry. In the fifth chapter you will be led through Inversive geometry which functions as a base for the sixth and seventh chapter. The sixth chapter has as itst title Non-Euclidean geometry, but it is in fact the Hyperbolic geometry of Boljay in a formulation of Henry Poincar�. The seventh chapter is about Spherical Geometry. In the eighth chapter all of these geometries are demonstrated to be special cases of the Kleinian vieuw of geometry: that is, every geometry can be seen as consisting of the invariants of a specific group of transformations of the 2 dimensional plane into itself. It is clearly demonstrated that this is less trivial than you would expect.
I learned two things from this book. The first is, that you can, in principle, prove every theorem of geometry by just using Euclidean geometry. But if you do this, the amount of work it takes can be very huge indeed. It is a far better strategy to try to determine what geometry is best suited for the problem at hand, and solve it within that geometry.
Since the book gives a very clear picture not only of the particular geometries, but also to how the geometries relate to each other, you have, as an extra bonus, insight in the level of abstraction and the scope of your theorem.
The second thing I learned is how you can use geometry to make concepts as simple as 'triangle' precise. What I mean is this: a right angle triangle is not the same as an equilateral triangle. But both are the same in the sense that they are both triangles. The question is this: how can two 'things' be the same and at the same time not 'the same'? The book gives an answer to this 'question about the meaning of abstractions'. It gives the following solution. Take a triangle, ANY triangle. Consider the group of all affine transformations A (which consists of an uncountably infinite set of transformations.) If you subject this one triangle Tr to every affine transformation in this group A, you will have created a set consisting of exactly ALL triangles. In other words, the abstract idea of 'triangle' consists of ONE triangle Tr together with the set of ALL affine transformations. You can denote this as the pair (Tr, A). In the same way you can express the abstract idea of ellipse by the pair (El, A), and the abstract idea of parabola by the pair (Par, A). And, by passing to the more abstract Projective geometry, you can express the abstract idea of 'conic' by giving just one quadratic curve, be it a parabola, ellipse or hyperbola, by the pair (Qu, P), whereby P is the group of all projective transformations.
The book presupposes some group theory and some knowledge of linear algebra. Furthermore you have to know a little calculus. I have very little knowledge of group theory, and I have just about enough knowledge and skill about linear algebra to know the difference between an orthogonal and unitary matrix, and to know what eigenvectors are. I have studied the first 5 chapters of CALCULUS from Tom M. Apostol, which does not go too deep into linear algebra. This proved to be enough.
I have only one point of critique. Virtually all problems in the book are of the 'plug in type', even those at the end of every chapter (from which, by the way, you cannot find the solutions at the end of the book, while the solutions of those in the text can be found in an appendix). If you have understood the text, you have no difficulties whatsoever to solve them. The problems are not challenging enough to give you a real skill in all of these geometries, although they do become more challenging in later chapters. They are only intended to help you to understand the basic principles of all of these geometries, no more, no less. So if you want to have a tool to help you in obtaining a greater skill in, say, the special theory of relativity by studying hyperbolic geometry, this is not a suitable book. That is why I have given it 4 stars, and not the full 5 stars.
I also have a piece of advise. Although the problems are, from a conceptual point of view, not challenging, a mistake is easily made. Therefore it is best to solve the problems by making use of a mathematical program like Maple or Mathematica. If you then have made a mistake, you can backtrack exactly where you have made it, and let the program take care of all of the tedious calculations. This has also stimulated to try to calculate some outcomes by following a different approach, and then to compare the results.
I have enjoyed studying this book immensely.

A Nice Introduction to Geometrys - Precise and Accurate!

This book is at the level of a freshman mathematics course.

Mainly deals with Affine, Projective, Inversive, Spherical and Non-Euclidean geometrys. The beauty of the book is in its accuracy. Someone has done a good job of technical editing! There is always a risk of getting things wrong when attempting to make mathematics accessible at a lower level. The authors seem to have avoided that pitfall with significant success. I have had significant interests in geometries, and work in a area that uses some elementary projective geometry. At times I get asked some relatively simple questions such as "why do we need 4x4 matrices in Computer Graphics?" Often I just answer such questions to the minimum (" ... it makes applying translations easier ..."). I never proffer a deeper answer because most people I run into either have no background to understand a more technical explanation in terms of the algebra of projective planes or they don't care - they don't need to, for most of their work!. (Many of the computer graphics folks I have met think that the homogeneous coordinates is an ad-hok concept that was invented as a "trick"!)

Occasionally, I do run into some who are interested in knowing the analytical reasoning behind some of the transformations used everyday in computer graphics. This book demonstrated to me how to talk to some of those without having to use very abstract concepts of geometry. I read it first in 1999. I have revisited it since, many times for the nice figures they provide. First time, it took me about three "after work" months to study through the book - not bad at all for a 350+ pages mathematics book!

By looking at the diagrams in the book, I learned how to draw simple diagrams instead of abstract symbols to explain the concepts, theorems and problems. For a book that is as simple, the technical content is remarkably precise and accurate. The book assumes minimal background in mathematics.

Recommended for people interested in computer graphics and want to understand the transformations in there deeper (for whatever reason!), under-graduate students interested in geometry, and for anyone with a casual interest in geometry.

DIY Skin Care

I ordered this e-book when I decided I would like to buy and make skin care products that contain only the ingredients needed to do the job. With the recipes in this book you can make lotion bars and creams that contain no unnecessary or questionable ingredients. There is also support from the author at her website and blog for answers to any questions you may have along the way. I do not like the feel of lotions on my skin, especially on my hands, and whenever I used hand cream in the past I immediately washed it off. I like the feel of these products on my skin. I made the Foot Protector Bar from this book for the teachers in my school when sandal and flip flop season began. They loved them! The author has a companion book at her website with ideas on making similar DIY lotions and bars to give as gifts, with suggestions and resources for styles and packaging. If you would like to control the ingredients in your skin care products, this e-book is for you.
Links to the author's website, step-by-step videos for each product, and resources for ingredients and packaging are imbedded in the book.

These are simple easy to follow recipies without too many ingredients that give you a great finished project. These recipies prove it isnt the number of ingredients that make a great product, its the RIGHT igredients that make a great product! The ingredients are available on her website but also easy to find in stores. Execpt for the zinc oxide used in the sunscreen, I can't find it in stores but it is available on her website. There is also another book available on her website that has a fantastic recipie for chocolate peppermint lotion bars. Excellent book for both beginners and experienced lotion / body care product makers.

The right solution!

This story made my son and me laugh! We live near a lagoon and know all about mosquitoes. They drive us mad. We've tried each of the methods used in the story, and also found that the final solution, 'the magic oil', works best. The author, Orit, has a great sense of humor, and this is very important to children; they love to laugh... so, I give this a thumbs up!

In September 2004, Ukrainian presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko was poisoned by dioxin, which caused severe illness and disfigurement. In October 2006, journalist Anna Politkovskaya, a critic of President Vladimir Putin and his handling of the Chechen conflict, was shot to death in Moscow. In November 2006, former KGB officer Alexander Litvinenko was poisoned by polonium-210 and died after several days of agony. Litvinenko was known for publicly alleging that the Russian government was behind numerous acts of terrorism against its own people, including Politkovskaya's murder. These stories are familiar to most who follow international news. What many people do not know is that this type of assassination has a long history extending through Soviet regimes as far back as Lenin. Pretentious & Vacuous

"Groundbreaking study" - "Full Details of Litvinentko Murder" - "Nothing of this sort has ever been published." These adulatory blurbs are not citations from actual book reviews. In fact they are so out of line with the reality of the book that I suspect they were written by the author. I would also bet that Zenith is a well-disguised vanity press. The book imitates the dramatic style of startling revelations by genuine investigative journalism, but does not offer substantive new information on the Litvinenko murder or the murderous history of the KGB. What you will find is a massive jumble of details presented with no effort by the author to select or distinguish what is relevant from what is irrelevant. Insight? There isn't any. Regarding Litvinenko in particular, nothing new is offered in the book that wasn't already stated in Volodarsky's article published the day after Litvinenko's death, in the St. Petersburg Times on 11/24/06. I confess to not providing an illustration in this review of the book's alleged faults, because it would be exceedingly laborious to quote and analyze sample globs of text. There is nothing to be gained from it, e.g. separating the wheat from the chaff, because it seems all chaff. I wrote this short-cut review to save others from buying the book based on the blurbs. Alas, I naively took them seriously, but the punch-line is that no one seems to be buying the book anyway. P.S. The other review was written by the author after being offended by mine. I doubt that he will confess.

Diferential diagnosis for dissidents and defectors

This book is a must read for everyone who does not believe in accidental deaths of high-profile enemies of the Russian state, and wants to become more familiar with characteristic signature of KGB murders by poisoning. All presented cases were killings committed by the KGB (or FSB) on direct order of the president. The book presents in detail some of the most ill-famous KGB poisonings abroad.

All cases presented in this book provide detailed description of methods used by the perpetrators to mask the symptoms and make the murder look like natural death. As pointed out, the best murder looks like a heart attack.

Special attention is paid to the two known cases of poisoning by custom-made KGB radioactive weapon in people who lived long enough to tell the tale: the fatal case of polonium 210 poisoning as used in the case of Alexander Litvinenko in October/November 2006, and thallium poisoning as used for Nikolai Khokhlov in September 1957. Khokhlov was a trained assassin and turned himself in when he was sent to kill Russian �migr� G.S. Okolovich in Frankfurt am Main in 1943. His next operation was conducted under direct supervision of the FBI.

What is interesting about the Khokhlov case is the way he was trained back in the POW camp in order to get a new identity of a fellow prisoner (page 165). In 1957, when Khokhlov got ill with an unknown condition, his life was saved by U.S. Army medical facility which correctly identified the cause as thallium poisoning. This can be compared to the confusion and apparent inability to establish correct diagnosis by British doctors in 2006 in the Litvinenko's case. This time, the Americans did not get involved, as this murder did not formally belong to the jurisdiction of the USA, and Litvinenko never worked for them. Litvinenko's key work includes book "Blowing Up Russia", which documents how FSB is responsible for the series of bombings of the apartment buildings, rather than the Chechen terrorists. Litvinenko's death came just a few weeks after the murder of Anna Politkovskaya. Her poisoning on the flight to Chechnya during the Beslan crisis is briefly discussed as part of the Litvinenko case.

Dioxin used in the poisoning of Ukrainian presidential candidate Victor Yushchenko in September 2004 was a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge as well. Should he stayed in Ukrainian hospital Feofania, his chances of survival would be very slim, because doctors were practically barred from attending the sick man, and those who still attempted to help, were either threatened or fired from their jobs (page 102). Chervonenko, Alexander Tretyakov, and Yushchenko's American-born wife made a quick and sound decision to fly Yushchenko to a private hospital in Vienna, Austria. At that time, the most prominent symptoms were acute pancreatitis, severe inflammation and ulceration of gastrointestinal tract, and atypical skin disease. Doctor Nikolai Korpan, who first came with the theory that his patient was poisoned, had to face tough questioning and his immigration status and professional credentials were seriously challenged. He was right, and the toxicological analysis fully confirmed dioxin poisoning. State Department refused to get involved.

In May 1962, 24-year-old Lt Lapusnyik defected from Hungary to Austria and turned himself in to the Austrian police. He was placed in detention for questioning, and described loopholes in Iron Curtain and provided valuable information about the functioning of the Hungarian Ministry of Interior. In June 1962, he died of a brain hemorrhage. The author's estimate is that the substance to blame was DMS (dimethyl-sulphate). Austrian authorities decided to turn blind eye to this obvious murder. At that time, Austrian security forces were heavily penetrated by Russian and their satellites' agents; and the total number of intelligence officers (declared) in Vienna and Salzburg outnumbered US and UK stations combined.

The death of Soviet Naval officer Nikolai Artamonov (Shadrin/Lark) in 1975 was an accident, as the chloroform used to stuff him in the KGB car was not meant to kill him. He was supposed to be brought to Moscow for questioning. Lark was smuggled over Czech border through one of the loopholes described by Lapusnyik, and died of asphyxiation. This case is interesting for two reasons - the substitute of Colonel Kuryshev 1 who disappeared with Lark over the Czech border, and Kuryshev 2, who continued to serve in Vienna (in other words, identity fraud). Artmanov was closely working with the KGB under American control, and was disposed off on neutral territory.

Another interesting case presented here is assassin Bogdan Stashinsky, who was recruited by the KGB after he got caught on train without a ticket. In 1957, he was ordered to kill Rebet for his work "The Theory of Nations" by poisonous gas (cyanide) shot straight in the victim's face. Three days later, he killed exactly the same way Ukrainian nationalist leader Stephan Bandera. There is an interesting paragraph about kill conditioning on page 185. Stashinsky was tried in court for his crimes, got 8 years, and was resettled in a third country. On Oct 19, 1962, the High Court judge ruled that the Soviet government in Moscow was guilty of all political assassinations. It would be great if this much attention was paid to resettlement of victims.

In Russia, assassinations are still a way how to dispose of politically undesirable �migr�s and defectors. The book is not an easy read, but it is worth the time. It is thoroughly researched and backed up by solid evidence.

Interesting book - recommended for espionage afacionados

A good read. Although due to its somewhat "choppy" style, I would recommend it for well-read espionage aficionados - who already know the basic structure of the KGB/FSB, etc. I particularly liked the summary of Putin's ascent to power starting in St Petersburg (toward the back of the book). I also appreciated the chapters on Khokhlov - a fascinating case, altho apparently Brooke-Shepherd's work attributes more to K. - Volodarsky likens him to a mere assistant. I look foward to the author's next work.

About the Author
The author has been a resident of Japan for 25 years, working as a teacher, translator, and liaison for international programs. Among his credentials are: Japanese Language Proficiency Exam, First Class Certification; Japanese Kanji Kentei (certified examination), First Class Certification; Japanese Business Writing Kentei, Second Class Certification. He presently lives in Takamatsu on the island of Shikoku.

Good book with potential to be excellent

This is a good book. I've been studying Japanese as a hobby for a year or so and making slow but steady progress. I use this book all the time. I love the author's clear, pleasant style, through which I discern an amiable, helpful, knowledgeable person. Reading this book is like being helped with your Japanese by a good friend. I would recommend this book to anyone.

I hope the author does a second edition and alters it slightly. The book's major problem from my perspective is that the author did not decide whether he wanted to write a reference grammar or to write a textbook to teach Japanese verbs.

If it is meant to be a reference grammar, it minimally needs a good index and an informative table of contents. As it is, it is really hard to find anything in the book. Sometimes I know I have seen something in the book, but I am reduced to going through the book page by page to look for it. There is no index, and the table of contents, which consists solely of entries like "Base 1 + nakareba," would only be useful to someone who already knows the stuff in the book. It might be nice also to tighten up organization a bit. As it is, the book is studded with subsections that begin something like "Oh, as long as I'm telling you this, now would be a good time to mention this." So important topics get buried in sections nominally covering other topics. And, since so much in this book depends on the bases from which verb forms are made, it might be nice to have one section where the formation of all the bases is laid out in methodical fashion so that the user, confronted with some utterance like "'you desu' after base 3," can easily track down what base 3 is without paging through the whole book.

However, the author actually seems to have set out to write more of a textbook than a reference grammar because the book generally assumes that the reader knows what has already been covered earlier in it. If that is the case, the author needs to include exercises so that students can actually practice what he is explaining and to give more thought to systematically building up vocabulary and grammar from the rudimentary to the complex as the book moves on. And even then, a decent index and table of contents would help.

I actually think this book would be easier to nudge into the direction of a reference grammar than a text book, and that's what I would advise.

But, please, don't let my comments deter you from buying this book. It has been a great help to me and it will be to you, too.

Excellent reference book

This book is excellent as a reference book. It's jam packed with tons of different verb conjugations and examples on how to use them. While it obviously isn't comprehensive, it still contains a wealth of knowledge that you most likely would not find elsewhere.

I especially like the foot notes and comments on how the phrases are used and when they aren't appropriate.

BUT, this should be used a reference book to supplement your learning. To get the most benefit out of the book you need to understand the JAPANESE examples, not just the English descriptions... and to understand the Japanese examples you will need to read / study other books, websites, or take lessons.

The book is ordered by verb bases, not really by simplicity.

Some of the Japanese examples can reach the intermediate level. This book doesn't really go into depth on the grammar behind the example sentences but that's understandable because this is a VERB book.

The additional particle section is very small and should be good enough for people who are just starting Japanese, but upper level beginners and intermediates will already know what's in there.
