Matt Zandstra has worked as a web programmer, consultant, and writer for over two decades. Excellent book, good upgrade from the 3rd edition

Matt Zandstra gives a good coverage of multiple OOP patterns applied to PHP programming, with good tips about where and how to use them. He also gives a small intro de PHP and write a lot about other topics (the "Practice" part of the book: using PEAR, testing, version control, continuos integration, etc.) all applied to PHP programming. Lot of people think this book is only for advanced programming but I think even novices would benefit from it. If you already have a previous edition this edition is a good upgrade (Matt rewrote some chapters, specially the ones on Practice). Even the printing is far better than the 3rd edition (the previous edition used terrible font and spacing making it hard to read) and it's more compact. I recommend this book to any PHP developer (novices or experts alike).

Kindle version has one small problem

In terms of content, this is an excellent book. It is probably a little too heavy for absolute PHP beginners, unless you're already well-versed in other modern programming languages. For people who only know PHP, or who don't know any languages and are looking to start with PHP, you should make sure you have a strong grasp of procedural PHP before heading this way.

That being said, the Kindle version has one major issue: the code samples. They look like someone printed them out with a dot-matrix printer, then scanned them at 150 DPI, saved as BMPs to preserve all the visual errors on the scan, and pasted them into the book as images. In other words, the code samples are not text at all - they are really, really crappy images and you will often find yourself squinting to make out all the details of the fuzzy "text".

This isn't a dealbreaker - after all, any programming book you buy today has downloadable samples of all code available somewhere on the Internet... but it IS an annoyance. Why they couldn't produce the code in real text with an alternate font I have no idea. Why they couldn't present higher quality images of the code I also have no idea.

Suffice to say, if you buy this for the Kindle, expect 5 star content with 3 star presentation - thereby bringing us to 4 overall.

OO for PHP well explained

I have read this book this summer.
Really good explanation on why it is necessary to structure PHP using the PHP 5.x OO options
I an a Java developer my self. Therefore the OO stuff is well known.
But I had no clue on how to structure solutions for PHP...

Probably the best OO book about PHP, therefore all 5 stars ***** :-)

Ofcause I could wish some thing else..
I use IntelliJ IDEA for my PHP development. And it has a lot of IDE support.
I would like the domain sections to reflect this.
IDEA will understand the SQL statement (strings) to PDO.
It can color errors, It can try out statements to a concrete database.
But it cannot do this if the distance between PDO and the query string is abstracted to far away. (Then it becomes gray for IDEA ...)

The samples in the book, I would also like to have in a zip

About the "kindle" .. oh I have big troubles getting used to that. I would prefer a PDF file with real pages. These 8000 kindle-pages. It makes no sense to me.
The kindle APP... there is severe room for improvements. I very easy loose where I am in the book. A few un-consentrated clicks.. And you are lost. No history back..
I hope (for Kindle) that there are some things I have not discovered yet in the reader...

Judging a book partly by its cover

The dictionary seems to be a good reference and resource for grades 3-6+. My reduced rating is for the binding. While the rest of the secondhand book is in great condition, the binding has completely separated from the pages. This is not the sign of a well-made reference book.

The book is in great condition and arrived faster than expected. It appears as if the dictionary is a combination of DK and Oxford. I expected the book to be up to Oxford standards but was disappointed because I found circular definitions: look up one word, definition says it's another word, look up the other word only to find out the definition is the first word. The reference images are great. Seller is very good with rapid fulfillment and description was accurate.

Bought this for my 7 year old grandson. So colorful and illustrative it appears many definitions leap off the page. Instead of using it only as a dictionary, I find myself turning pages and learning many new things and I'm the grandmom.

About the Author
Robin Wilson is emeritus professor of pure mathematics at the Open University, and emeritus professor of geometry at Gresham College, London (the oldest mathematical chair in England). He has written and edited about forty books on topics ranging from graph theory and the history of mathematics to Sudoku, music, and philately. Raymond Flood is vice principal of Kellogg College, Oxford, and former president of the British Society for the History of Mathematics.

Okay, but too many complex equations, hardly introductory.

If this book was written for the general reader, there are by far too many complicated mathematical expressions; if it was written for mathematicians it would seem old hat, or so I think. Personally, I found all the equations as unnecessary to understand the work of the mathematician the book did cover. The book was short, so I suppose that if the equations were absent, the book wouldn't be a book, but equivalent to a novella if it were fiction.

I did find this one gem, a quote from Leonhard Euler on complex numbers: “Of such numbers we may truly assert that they are neither nothing, nor greater than nothing, nor less than nothing, which necessarily constitutes them imaginary or impossible.”

Recommendation: Yes if you like equations, no if you don't like equations.

Electronics for everyone

Electronic Principles by Albert Malvino is one of the best electronics book there is. This book is ideal for someone who is just either interested in the field of electronics or is learning it as a trade. The 7th edition is excellent and contains many problems with answers in the back of the book. Malvino's job interview questions are an added bonus that I think most people will appreciate. The book is highly colorful and does not delve into the abstract mathematics that would only confuse a person just getting there feet wet.

I have to admit I was disappointed with the CD as a previous review mentioned however I feel this should not disqualify this book from consideration in somebodies library because of that. Highly recommend and deserving of 5 stars.

Comprehensive Electronic Devices Text Book

This text book was picked by the curriculum committee to be used in a course I teach.

If you are a student, you probably don't have much choice, and this is the book you need. None the less, this book is pretty well organized. The material is covered in what I would consider to be a sensible order and the depth of coverage is good for an associates degree program or engineering curriculum that doesn't want to get bogged down in too much calculus. Of course, basic calculus is not entirely absent.

I had a traditional math intensive electronic devices course when I earned my EE degree, and frankly I would have gotten a better education from the way the material is presented in this book.

If you aren't in a course that specifies this text and you are looking for a book with pragmatic information about real world electronics, this book is also a reasonable choice. If seeking a reference book, you may also want to consider the current edition of, "The Art of Electronics," by Horowitz and Hill as an alternative.

Electronics Principles, Seventh Edition

I recently ordered "Electronics Principles, Seventh Edition, Albert Malvino".
Athough the actual content of the book is good, the Publisher seems to have
uncorrected production issues. The pages in the front/back of the book, were for lack of a better description, wrinkled and/or stuck together.
It's is apparent that towards the back of the book there were two CD's that were removed at some point.
There are cardbord remenants of the CD holders where the CD holders were cut from the book.
Since there are imprints left on pages surrounding where the CD's were, it is clear enough
CD's were removed. I'm assuming since there is no MultiSim software included to actually run the simulation files, that the missing CD's were the student version of MultiSim.

It would have been nice if the Publisher had clearly indicated upfront, there is no actual simulation software included with the book,
as this is going to be an additional unanticipated cost neccessary to get the most out of this book.

I returned the first copy to Amazon, and a replacement copy in pretty much the same condition arrived, hence "uncorrected production issues"
I have contacted the Publisher asking about the production quality, and CDs that were removed.

Essential Reading

Like Thomas Mann's "Magic Mountain", this immense book aims at giving an overview of the ideas of its time. Musil is a more precise thinker and stylist than Mann, and "The Man Without Qualities" has a lot more to offer than Mann's book.
There are two opposing tendencies in the novel: On the one hand, Musil offers a highly entertaining satirical portrait of Austria-Hungary right before the First World War. His detached hero Ulrich meets all kinds of bizarre people, who happen to be members of the ruling class of the country. Like a vivisecteur, Ulrich analyzes the philosophies and ideologies of his time. On the other hand, he dreams of a kind of new mysticism, an emotional purity that is opposed to the dross surrounding him; together with his sister he embarks on quest for "the other state of being". Musil never finished the novel, he died before he could achieve a conclusion; which may have been impossible anyway.
This gigantic torso of a novel is arguably the greatest novel of the century. I have not yet come across anything that could rival it. Musil's prose is so precise that after reading a few pages you feel that your mind has been refreshed and cleared. This is not a novel to be read in a few days, but even if you never manage to finish it, you will always come back to it.

Wilkins and Kaiser gave us a great novel: this translation is a wet blanket

When I read the old translation by Eithne Wilkins and Ernst Kaiser, I judged 'The Man Without Qualities' to be one of the 10 greatest novels of all time. I bought this new translation with excitement, imagining an even better version by Sophie Wilkins and Burton Pike. As soon as the novel arrived, I started reading. After total boredom from the first 400 pages, I put it down blaming myself for this outcome. I returned to it six months later, with determination to rediscover the great novel I'd read 10 years ago. Again I was bored. Today, I opened the old translation along with the new. I searched for passages that I'd underlined with awe 10 years ago, and compared them with the new translation. Here is an example: (The old)"You people are in such a hurry. There always has to be a goal, an ideal, a programme there for you - something absolute. And what comes of it in the end is only a compromise after all, an average." versus (The new) "You and your friends - always jumping the gun. There's always got to be a supreme goal, an ideal, a programe - an absolute. Yet in the end, all that ever comes of it a compromise, some common denominator." The clarity and dramatic power of the former is replaced with soapy mush. How can Musil compete with Joyce and Proust when the new translation fails to connect to minds attuned to reading Shakespeare, Kafka, Cervantes and Tolstoy? Great literature lodges in the mind with the clarity of rhetorical force. It does not slide around like soap over marble. If you want to believe that Musil was one of the great novelists of the 20th century, then ignore the new translation and find the superior, alas incomplete, old one in a second-hand bookstore.

Helpful Comparisions

Like the infamous Proust translation by Moncrief and Kilmartin of Remembrance of Things Past, The Man Without Qualities is famous for and exists today because of the labor of the original translators.

Upon reading The Man Without Qualities I was swept up and lost in the tide of the prose, I simply could not stop reading it. Readability is something one doesn't often think of when considering classic foreign novels, one thinks of slow ponderous prose and intense philosophical repose that is dry and too descriptive. Oddly, this is what the new translation is, while the original is divergently witty and full of curiosity and clarity.

Granted, both translations contain the same thoughts, characters and themes. One cannot just toss one aside while fawning over the other. The new edition is indeed more complete a book than the old, but its sacrifice is apparent in how it carries the reader along.

Thus two excerpts: One from the old translation, and the same passage from the new.

"Perhaps not all of these people believe in that stuff about the Devil to whom one can sell one's soul; but all those who have to know something about the soul, because they draw a good income out of it as clergy, historians or artists, bear witness to the fact that it has been ruined by mathematics and that in mathematics is the source of a wicked intellect that, while making man the lord of the earth, also makes him the slave of the machine."

"Most of us may not believe in the story of a Devil to whom one can sell one's soul, but those who must know something about the soul (considering that as clergymen, historians, and artists they draw a good income from it) all testify that the soul has been destroyed by mathematics and that mathematics is the source of an evil intelligence that while making man the lord of the earth has also made him the slave of his machines."

Note the differences and make your own decision. For me, the poetry and majesty of the original is lost. It is no longer clear and precise either. In updating Musil, they lost the power along the way.

To quote the original translation in summation:
"We have gained in terms of reality and lost in terms of the dream."

Useful for the recovering damaged voice.

This book is great...I will say that, but it's a bit misleading. Before I purchased this I previewed a few pages on Amazon and it told me everything that I needed to know about what I was looking for...but overall this isn't exactly what I was looking for...especially not for $80. This book is more for people who have damaged their voice or people who have vocal disabilities and want to jump back into voice work. It's not for the singer who wants some tips on how to improve their voice which is who I am, but you can get some helpful information on how to relieve tension to have a much freer sound...that's really all I got from this book. I skipped about four or five chapters because they were just talking about vocal damage and how to bounce back from that. Maybe I will pick it up again and see if I can find anything in it that I possibly missed.

This book is fantastic, I am a voice therapist and it is an invaluable resource to me in my work with children and adults with voice disorders.It has reignited my interest in the area of voice work and I love the holistic approach that it promotes. The exercises are easily explained it is so practical. I am also using it to help me to explore and develop my own voice and this has been extremely beneficial for my hobby of acting. I would highly recommend this book .

This book is very valuable for anyone who works with the voice in any area. Using the voice when Presenting and Public Speaking is very important, and is the area I work in. This book is invaluable.

I read a review of this book by Pamela Parry in the British Voice Association Newsletter, and she summed it up really well
'A right gem that has been waiting in the wings tried to squeeze itself through my letterbox, Voice Work: Art and Science in Changing Voices by Christina Shewell. It's one of those big bendy books, 522 pages and what a veritable `pick'n'mix' Christina has given us. For me this is the Rolls Royce of books that has been purring away in the garage, and something that the author ought to be immensely proud of'.

As Patsy Rodenburg says in her foreword, Christina bridges the worlds between voice therapists and voice work teachers, and describes this as an "an important and unique book----a book that should be embraced by the voice world and owned by anyone working with the human voice".

If you are interested in voice in any form, then get hold of this book. Easy to read, packed with information, and it will leave you feeling good after reading it. I can't recommend it highly enough

Henry Ford--Young Man with Ideas

Questions, questions, questions! That's all little Henry Ford did, was ask questions. Well that "little boy" became one of the smartest men alive and he changed the way people travel around the entire world.
This book was honestly one of the best books I have ever read. On a scale from 1 to 10, I would definitely give it a 10! I couldn't possibly put it down. I would highly recommend this book to kids who have interests in inventions and want to learn about the fascinating life of Henry Ford. The book starts out when little Henry is turning five years old and expands to the rest of his life. This book tells about Henry's fascination with learning how things worked at an early age. Henry was always taking toys apart to see how they worked. One day he was given a broken watch. You would have thought he had been given his favorite candy. He had the watch fixed in no time! He was a curious boy with a smart mind. The book later tells how he becomes a multi-millionaire by manufacturing cars. Henry wanted to "build a car that everyone could own." He soon did and this car became known as the Model T. This book easily inspired me and could inspire other young children to push for their goals and dreams, and to never give up, no matter what happens.

I read this book 32 years ago in 6th grade and it was the 1st book that I actually could not put down. I fortunatley had a great 6th grade english teacher that noticed my interest in mechanical contraptions but that I disliked reading, so she set this book on my desk and asked that I use it for my book report assignment. After that book I have been hooked on reading. As another reviewer stated..... "This book easily inspired me and could inspire other young children to push for their goals and dreams, and to never give up, no matter what happens.".... that is easily the most important part of the book

Other reviewers have disliked the lack of dates..... THAT'S THE BEST PART!!!!! This book is the "lure" to learn more about Henry Ford, thank goodness that it was not weighed down with dates. I hope all Teachers and Parents that have that rebelious kid in class that dislikes reading but is into cars considers this book. I recently purchased a copy for my son with the hope that it has the same effect as it did on myself 32 years ago.

On a side note, the Childhood of Famous Americans series of books had many great titles that have slowly faded away. On the same theme as the Henry Ford book there is "WALTER CHRYSLER Boy Machinist", and another interesting title was "FW WOOLWORTH Five & Ten Boy" and they both have that "push for their goals and dreams, and to never give up, no matter what happens." theme running throughout. These were 1960's copyrights but you can still find them if you look for them, keep your kids inspired!!
