About the Author
Ken Blanchard, PhD, is one of the most influential leadership experts in the world. He has co-authored 60 books, including Raving Fans and Gung Ho! (with Sheldon Bowles). His groundbreaking works have been translated into over 40 languages and their combined sales total more than 21 million copies. In 2005 he was inducted into Amazon's Hall of Fame as one of the top 25 bestselling authors of all time. The recipient of numerous leadership awards and honors, he is cofounder with his wife, Margie, of The Ken Blanchard Companies�, a leading international training and consulting firm.
Cynthia Olmstead founded TrustWorks Group in 1987 and served as its president until it was bought by The Blanchard Companies in 2010. A group development expert, she recognized that the core of many problems is the lack of trust.

Don't Mistakenly Think it's Only About "Leadership"

OK, I'll have to admit it, I HATE those silly "leadership" books that sell thousands of copies "teaching" you to be a better time manager, people manager or self manager. Frankly, most of that stuff is TOO silly and of little value.
The problem with this fine book is that the publishers are promoting it in the management and "leadership" literature as a business/management type title, and in fact the author does give seminars to businesses, hopefully to keep the ideas percolating. HOWEVER, Ken's amazing little slices of life, stories, unexpected connections and just plain surprising new ideas go FAR beyond management, business, etc. to relationships of ALL kinds-- significant others, parents and kids, yes/work, as well as friends and "enemies."
This book is breathtaking in scope and incisive in insights. It's like "Profiles in Courage" that made you generalize and think about courage inductively. Same here-- there is an amazing series of "ahas" that happen about the phenomenon of trust itself, how it works, what it does, how it is important. It even touches on the spiritual in a way, in the form of "Who can you REALLY trust???" With so many deceptions around today, so much spinning we see everyday everywhere, and so much information (who knows what's really been vetted?), looking deeply at trust is timely and wonderful.
This isn't dry or word bending/ show off philosophy! It is a fun read, a page turner, you'll laugh and say WOW, I wish I'd known that when... Buy it! You'll find many perspective changing lessons that will bring you a lot more success and joy in both little and "big" relationships. If you've already read it, and loved it, here are two more brand new ones in a similar genre (eye openers) that I also really enjoyed:

Wondering? Read this book! :)

I enjoyed the stories. Yes we can all read pithy novels and dry instruction manuals; but I have more fun with parables. So while having fun I also was amazed at how much I was unaware of when it came to trusting others and their trusting me. I wish I had this knowledge as my children were growing up to share with them. It may seem small and simple, but just try one of these ideas a week and you will be surprised at the change in your life. Buy it, read it, you will be glad that you did.... I am.

Trust me. This book could help make the world a better place.

I feel it is my duty to preface my comments with an admission that this will not be an "arms-length" review. The reason is, Ken Blanchard is a treasured friend of mine, and I co-authored "The On-Time, On-Target Manager" with him. On top of that, I know Martha Lawrence and I respect her literary abilities. I even received an autographed copy of the book to add to my many shelves of signed editions.
So, you may safely assume that I enjoy all of Ken's books, especially since they all meet my basic requirement: I read books that help me in my personal or professional life and offer a key nugget or nuggets that will impact me. TRUST WORKS offers plenty of nuggets, they are memorable, effectively communicated, and they can be easily applied.
Ken (and his coauthors) are known for telling engaging parables to make the key points...usually three or four basic ideas that build upon one another. While this book continues in that tradition, it is presented in two parts. Part I is the "parable" portion of the book. "A Tale of Trust" is the story of a family, their pets, and how they all employed the ABCD Trust Model to resolve their trust issues. Part II presents the "Trust Building Resources" readers will need to apply the principles in their relationships at home and in the workplace.
There is a tool the reader can use to assess his or her trustworthiness, and the authors suggest that the reader's partner or coworkers also be asked to use a similar form (also included in the book) to evaluate him or her. The reader would then compare the self-evaluation with those of others. This will be a wonderful exercise in self-discovery!
The ABCD Trust Model is quite brilliant. If you use it on a consistent basis, I believe this book will help you gain a better understanding of why and how "trust works," and why it is so important to build and maintain trust in all of your relationships. Buy it, read it, apply it!
