Hello, I Must Be Going: A Novel, by Christie Hodgen

"Hodgen's writing soars in this sad and funny novel."―Ann Hood, author of The Knitting Circle

It's the early 1980s, and tomboy Frankie Hawthorne's world is overturned when her beloved father―a Vietnam amputee who masks depression by playing comedian―shoots himself. Frankie's neighborhood, in a down-at-the-heels industrial city near Boston, has had its own happier times. Left behind along with Frankie are her mother, Gerrie, a waitress at Friendly's, and a sweetly innocent younger brother, Teddy.

Soon, Frankie decides not to talk, resisting the overly ebullient school psychologist, and comforting herself by drawing cartoons. Gerri, now chain-smoking and addicted to television―Doris Day! Rock Hudson!―wears an imaginary charm bracelet of disappointments. The once-adorable Teddy runs wild and is frequently summoned to the principal's office.

Finally, with some unlikely help, Frankie understands the possibility of growing beyond grief. Balancing perfectly between funny and sad, this poignant novel is about the tenacity of ghosts and the stubbornness of love.

From Publishers Weekly
When Randall Hawthorne, a clowning but depressed Vietnam War veteran living in a central Massachusetts city in the early 1980s, commits suicide, he leaves behind a stunned and grieving family—nine-year-old daughter Frankie; her younger brother, Teddy; and their mother, Gerry, a waitress. Frankie, who narrates this wise and often funny first novel about loss and survival (after the collection, A Jeweler's Eye for Flaw), masks her loneliness and pain with the desperate bravura of a precocious but wounded adolescent, mocking her teachers and the school psychologist, drawing obsessively in her sketchbook and dissociating from events in her life by imagining she's a character in a book. But Frankie is too smart and tough to remain isolated forever, and as she proceeds through high school and toward college, she begins to understand the need to connect with others. Most important, she sees how her father's jokes and tall tales were attempts to cover his postwar anguish and to make his children love him. Though Hodgen's sense of the absurd is sometimes overdone and her efforts to capture an adolescent sensibility can err on the side of preciousness, Frankie's vulnerability and resilience make this a moving novel. Review
“The work of a wildly talented writer. Christie Hodgen's kid-narrator, Frankie, faces tragic loss in a world where everyone is earnestly, hilariously, flamboyantly making a mess of trying for better days. Every intense, vibrant detail in this novel feels exactly right.” (Joan Silber)

“Dark and witty, Christie Hodgen's prose is exhilarating to read.” (Marly Swick)

“Wise and often funny....Frankie's vulnerability and resilience make this a moving novel.” (Publishers Weekly)

Frankie is Unforgettable
By Jennifer Sandell
The author, Christie Hodgen made a wise and wonderful choice to have a child narrate this book. Frankie Hawthorne is nine years old when her father, whom she is very close to, commits suicide and leaves both she and her younger brother, Teddy to kind of fend for themselves because their mother works all the time and when she isn't working she's glued to the TV set. Frankie has a widly ascerbic, mocking personality and sense of humor. She carries the entire novel and does so quite well. Every line in this book is placed just right and is authentic. This book is very much like real life and I enjoyed it very much.

"Oh, we were all afraid of Virginia Woolf."
By Luan Gaines
Disaffection, unemployment, the government's disregard for returning veterans, an increasingly unpopular war: all these things color the daily travails of the Hawthorne family, near Boston in the 1980's. For nine-year-old Frankie and her younger brother, Teddy, such problems do not exist, protected by their parents, Gerry and Randall, for that all-too-brief respite called childhood. Gerry works double shifts at a local restaurant, Friendly's, while Randall, a Vietnam amputee, attends to the needs of the children, filling their days with foolish jokes and silly banter, endless Groucho Marx imitations ("Hello, I must be going"), a magical world of TV images and spontaneous laughter. Whatever tensions bedevil their parent's marriage, Frankie and Teddy are exempt, at least until fate intervenes. Even an unexpected visit from "Uncle Harpo" only adds to the children's enjoyment, enthralled by story-filled hours and raucous humor as the brothers reprise the antics of their own youth.

When Randall shoots himself, no longer able to sustain the despair that wracks his days, Frankie and Teddy's childhood comes to an abrupt end. Gerry is overwhelmed, barely treading the rising water of her own grief and helpless to protect her children from the sudden tragedy. Teddy and Frankie rise bravely to the occasion, the emotional fissures of the family only gradually surfacing as the years pass. Later Frankie withdraws, often viewing herself from the third person; Teddy throws increasingly violent tantrums, railing at the unfairness of his young life, set upon a self-destructive path; and Gerry stares, hypnotized by the television, staggering between work and home, drinking herself to sleep, muttering, "you kids", unable to reach her flailing children: "The trouble with the dead was that they packed up and left you, and there was nothing you could do about it."

The author taps into the bittersweet memories of childhood, evoking the fragile and transient moments when a child's existence is not yet trampled by the world. Written in Frankie's perspective, this poignant family drama is infused with unexpected grace, the girl sensitive to her mother's desperate attempts to keep her family safe despite the tensions that drive them apart. They gather religiously in front of their black and white television, enthralled by the simple dramas played out on the screen, the flickering TV almost a family member, the stories as real as any they share in these bleak days. Sustained only by their determination to survive, the family makes a remarkable journey from grief to hope, each battered by a shared loss. Hello, I Must Be Going is a remarkable novel, filled with transcendent moments and heartbreak, unconditional love and laughter triumphant in the face of sorrow and defeat. Luan Gaines/ 2006.

Hello, I Must Be Going Tells the Right Story
By Craig M. Workman
This story puts the reader in the very places Frankie inhabits. Throughout the tough years of her adolescence, Hodgen expertly creates the life, family, and times of a misunderstood, often stepped-on young woman trying to find her place. A must read!

Art, Cultural Heritage, and the Law: Cases and Materials, by Patty Gerstenblith

Art, Cultural Heritage, and the Law is one of the first and most comprehensive legal casebooks to address the rapidly emerging fields of art and cultural heritage law. It is also distinctive in its extensive use of an interdisciplinary approach and images to illustrate the artworks discussed in the legal materials. This book addresses artists' rights (freedom of expression, copyright, and moral rights); the functioning of the art market (dealers and auction houses, warranties of quality and authenticity, transfer of title and recovery of stolen art works, and the role of museums), and finally cultural heritage (the fate of art works and cultural objects in time of war, the international trade in art works and cultural objects, the historic, archaeological and underwater heritage of the United States, and indigenous cultures, focusing on restitution of Native American cultural objects and human remains, and appropriation of indigenous culture).

The third edition retains the basic structure of the earlier editions while updating case law, policies and events. It includes cutting edge legal developments, such as the new decisions in the Fisk University dispute, Bakalar v. Vavra, and Cassirer v. Spain, United States ratification of the 1954 Hague Convention, restitutions of ancient art works from US museums to Italy and other countries, and application of museum policies. Expanded and updated treatment is given to art merchant practices, functioning of the art market, and the use of civil forfeiture to recover illegally imported cultural objects.

A True Soul Story
By MSB
GG's talent as a writer and the way she expresses herself in ways most of us can only dream of, made me an immediate fan of her as an individual and an admirer of her artistry. The introductory connection she made with women of the world through blogging about hair and hair care products on "All the Many Layers", became so much more than reviews about the shampoo and how to do a twist outs, it was the first glimpse into the life of a beautiful soul. As the blog evolved to incorporate a broader offering of her services and showcasing of her talents, so did GG. Shortly thereafter came The Beautiful Disruption and this extraordinary spirit we all knew as GG Rene Hill, became a movement.

If you follow "All the Many Layers", you may recognize some of its posts as you read, The Beautiful Disruption. The story that this book tells of a girl recounting parts of her childhood growing up with a schizophrenic mother, contrasted and entwined with the story of a woman struggling to reconcile heart-break, is another dimension of the author's soul she unveils to her readers, the aspect I loved most. My interest in the book was sustained throughout, as I continuously wondered which parts were real and which were fiction. She does a phenomenal job of ensuring cohesiveness from beginning to end so at no time does it ever feel like you are reading two separate books. There was not much that I disliked about this book, however, by the end, I was left wanting more and wondering what She was going to do next. This could be perceived as a good or bad thing. This book is literally a beautiful piece, from the front cover to the back. I would recommend this book (and the blog), to any person who can relate to being affected by someone managing a mental disorder or physical handicap, any woman who has grappled with heartbreak and anyone interested in getting to know a beautiful soul, the author.

From the moment we made one-another's acquaintance, I was in awe of GG because we had so many things in common, but yet she was everything I wished I was. As soon as the book's availability was announced, I went on line and purchase it. The pride, respect and admiration I feel for her as a human being, a woman and now as an author, has only made me love her more over the years. Congratulations GG, many blessings and continued success. I cannot WAIT to read book 2.

A Must Read!
By Dana K
"The Beautiful Disruption" is an intimate, thought-provoking story about spiritual growth. Life's struggles (especially the internal struggles we face every day) can really wear on you, and sometimes we need a reminder that life is unexpected, it can hurt, it can be beautiful, it can be cruel, it can be kind, and sometimes it takes a soul-stirring event (a disruption) to make us wake up and start taking control. No, we can't predict or control every single thing that happens to us, but there is much that we CAN control, including what we tell ourselves, how we see ourselves, and who we share ourselves with. Find the good in life, the good in yourself, and shine a light on it. That's just a portion of what I got from this book. I can't wait to read more from GG, her writing style really draws you in, she knows how to connect with her readers. Just really, really good.

Self-titled and self-produced, Zayn awards us with a view of his life pre, during, and post 1D. But the book isn’t really about 1D at all. It’s a sprawling and eclectic work of song notes, photographs of Malik, and a few pieces of his own personal art. It provides us, through the sentimental stories and heartwarming positivity that Malik weaves in every page, with a rare inside look at the person - not the popstar.

It’s romantic at times, simply in the personal and casual nature with which the book presents itself. You can imagine Malik spilling his life’s story to you at a barbecue, and the words seem pulling directly from his own thoughts. There's no ghostwriting here, and it's refreshing to see a celebrity's "personal account of their life" actually be their OWN personal account, and not an interviewer trying to hammer in the person's syntax in every sentence. These are Zayn's words, emphatic and innocent and so very relatable.

There’s not much sugar-coating, either. It’s honest and real, two things that Malik has professed to always striving for, and I must say he definitely succeeds. He details his struggles with an eating disorder, as well as crippling anxiety and self-doubt. It’s equal parts heart wrenching and hopeful. He vows to perform, vows to make his fans and his family proud, and you find yourself rooting for him to do just that. Though Malik pulls no punches, describing his feelings about lack of control in his life that led to his eating disorder, there’s a wistfulness to his words. Never cynical or even histrionic, but occasionally weathered after the vast amount of life he’s lived already, the book also serves as a true reminder that Malik is only twenty-two years old. He is just barely an adult in the eyes of the world, but has already experienced enough to fill a book. He’s charming in his photographs, and his talent shines through in song notes, bits of unused lyrics, and his own personal art creations he displays.

All-in-all, it was a great read. I finished in just about two and a half hours - and that was with stopping to appreciate Malik’s beauty in every photograph. It’s a quick read-through, meant to be browsed and perused and appreciated for years to come. If you want to know about the real Zayn Malik, there’s no better way than with his own words, and this is it.

Zayn broke a ton of hearts (not mine– I’d actually never even liked One Direction
By Aimal Farooq
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll probably know who Zayn is—or at least have heard of him once or twice. Normal British teenager turned pop-star overnight, becoming one of the five members of a massive boyband, touring all over the world, selling hundreds of millions of albums, topping charts, and then suddenly leaving, seemingly out of nowhere. When he left the band in March 2015, Zayn broke a ton of hearts (not mine– I’d actually never even liked One Direction, but I thought he was both very attractive and the only talented one among the five). Many thought that they’d never get to hear him sing, but a year later, Zayn was #1 in 78 countries with his bestselling debut album. He’s now designing a fashion line with Donnatella Versace and Guiseppe Zannotti, is a producer for a TV show, and is also a bestselling author.

In Zayn, he tells his side of the story. Zayn’s often talked about how the media and his former management have projected an image on him that he doesn’t deserve. And it’s true—Zayn became known, out of nowhere, as the “bad boy” of the group, the mysterious, private, brooding brown kid who was so different to his bubbly bandmates. Sure, from the exterior, the stereotype can be applied. Covered in tattoos with an unkempt beard and a sharp buzzcut, Zayn walks around in heavy boots, leather jackets, cigarette dangling from his mouth. But his book provides a very different side to him. Strip back the layer that’s been presented to you, and a charming young boy comes to the forefront.

What have I learned about Zayn after reading this book? That he loves his mother more than anything in the world, and constantly talks about her. He loves to read and write—every lyric he pens down means something to him. He likes to eat samosas, and can cook. He calls himself a feminist and thinks the world would be a hell of a better place if we had more women in positions of power. He loves boxing, he loves cartoons and superheroes—and he’s literally just like any other young-adult boy on the streets, except that he has millions of fans—whom he acknowledges and thanks on every other page. This book isn’t just an autobiography; it’s a clarification, and it’s a well-formulated, honest defense written by someone who has been labelled and trashed for years and years, for no good reason.

A thing that drew me in about Zayn was that he doesn’t talk about other people. Not once does he trash or defame anyone—not his ex, not his bandmates, not even his management. He keeps it classy, talking about his issues with fame, the part he played in everything. He presents a candid look into his experiences with mental health and opens up about his anxiety, his ADHD and eating disorders. He had every reason to talk about his failed engagement and his broken friendships with the other members of One Direction, but he does not. This book is about him, and he makes sure that it’s never about anyone else. It’s about his life, his world, his past and what he hopes his future will be. It’s about his struggles with his faith, his Pakistani-English mixed race, about his experiences with bigotry and racism in the past. It’s about him.

This book is not just an autobiography; it’s a high-production, piece of art. Full of glossy, often full-page photos and hand-written notes, scans of his lyrics and doodles, Zayn is the perfect addition to any fan’s (or non-fan’s) collection. It’s a perfect coffee table book, written with sincerity and class. And though you may not care about him now, you’ll find him charming and endearing once you’ve finished reading.

We love you Zayn
By Doll-ar
There is a rare selection of books that I finish within 1 - 3 days. No matter how much I enjoy a book, it's not unless it's super attention-grabbing (see also: Ellen Hopkins' books) that I can finish it in such a short amount of time. But this book definitely fits into that category - and for good reason.

This book is amazing. I never stopped loving Zayn, from the moment I discovered 1D until now I've always loved him. But I still had a lot of questions, especially regarding March 25 2015. I won't say that *all* my questions have been answered, but I definitely feel like I know more about and understand/relate to Zayn more than I ever have before.

If you're looking for a "tell-all" book on the on-goings of 1D with a bunch of "juicy drama" in it, this book is not for you. He doesn't say anything bad about the other 1D boys; the only time he talks about them is when he's talking about leaving the band, or about how much he appreciated the experience his years with them gave him. He never bad-mouths any of the members in this book or talks about anything they've done, only about things he's done.

He talks about a lot of things that I can only imagine took a lot of courage for him to reveal to us - including an eating disorder and anxiety issues. The fact that he trusts his fans enough to feel like he can open up about these things, is amazing.

In addition to the serious things though, he also talks about the process of making his music/songs. He talks about what all went into the creation of the album, who he worked with for tracks, etc. It's awesome to get an inside look and learn what goes into his art. I almost feel like I'm witnessing something I shouldn't be.

All around, this is an amazing book. I think anybody who's interested in Zayn or wants to learn more about who he really is on the inside, should read it. I'm so proud of Zayn and everything he has accomplished and will accomplish in the future.

Honestly this was waaaaay better than the movie!
By Setsuna
I never review and I would never review on anything Twilight. But I guess there is a first for everything! I received this book in the mail today and was immediately impressed. Opening it up, I honestly didn't really know what I was expecting. I saw the movie before I read the books. First thoughts was the movie was ok, but after I read the book, I hated the movie.
After finishing the graphic novel (took about an hour) I have to say, it makes me wish they would re-do and re-cast the first movie. This is way more than even I could have imagined. Stephanie Meyer was right when she wrote that this breathed new life into the Bella and Edward story. The drawings are exactly how I would have pictured the characters for the movie should look like. The vampires are truly beautiful and Bella has that understated beauty, so well drawn out in this novel. Their love story is not rushed (like in the movie...I never understood why Bella and Edward fell in love) and is well played out. What surprised me even more was the nice little splashes of color through-out the book. This is what sets this apart from being a boring black and white manga/comic, the splashes of colors (there is a nice colored twilight scene) and the emotions certain scenes carried.
Definitely a must read, this is the way the movie SHOULD have been like!

Good for a rainy day fantasy...
By T. Adlam
It seems this book has received massive amounts of acclaim, but I never heard of it until I decided to watch The Dark Knight. A preview for the movie Twilight came on and mentioned that it was based on the best-selling novel by Stephenie Meyer. Since the preview looked good and I prefer to read books before seeing the movie, I picked up a copy.

Now that you know why I purchased the book, I should also mention that I'm not necessarily the target demographic and haven't been for a few years. But that doesn't mean I don't enjoy the good YA fantasy fiction book every now and again. (I've been called a perpetual teenager on more than one occasion.)

I'm going to try and keep this review as spoiler-free as possible. In case you haven't already gathered it from other reviews, or the book description itself, Twilight is about a young girl named Bella Swan who moves to Forks, Washington and finds herself in love with a vampire named Edward Cullen. The climax of the story happens when a vampire who doesn't abstain from feasting on humans, as the Cullen coven does, decides he wants Bella. Up until this point (first three quarters), the novel progresses at a moderate, but not lagging pace and then instantly picks up.

The book itself is a rather easy read, however, the characters seem somewhat shallow. Bella is supposed to be an honour student, but behaves exactly the opposite. Edward, who has been in existence for more than a hundred years, should be more intelligent and far wiser than is portrayed in his character. Armed with this tidbit about him, Meyer had plenty of room to play around and mold him into so much more, but never truly took that opportunity.

In fact, after finishing the first book (I've read both Twilight and New Moon), I wondered what a century old vampire might find utterly attractive in a seemingly average 17 year old girl, besides the fact that she smelled delectable, could pick out a common tune by Debussy, and had a penchant for identifying the mitotic phases of an onion. Even Bella herself wonders the same thing and makes it plainly obvious by asking almost every other page what this magnificent Adonis can possibly see in her, which became rather tiring.

(On another note, I'm still trying to figure out how any person with dark circles under his eyes and lavender eyelids can be likened to Adonis. It could just be me, but the way Meyer described their features, I couldn't help imagining a well-fed crack fiend half the time.)

While I don't understand how the love between Bella and Edward can be so true and deep as made out in the book, considering they only knew each other for a few months, I can understand how Bella formed such a strong attachment to Edward: he saved her life on more than one occasion and, in a sense, has become her personal Superman. Is this right thinking? Dunno, but I guess constantly saving a girl who can barely walk without tripping does equate to being inexplicably lovable.

By the end of the novel, I realized that Bella's character, though stubborn, was unbelievably insecure--more so than one would expect from the typical teenage girl--and Edward, arrogant as he can be, used this insecurity to his benefit (whether consciously or not), thus causing multiple crises of conscience for "putting [her] in harm's way".

When one really steps back from this novel and looks at the entire scope of it, the true dysfunction of their unhealthy relationship is obviously apparent.

Plus, Meyer's overuse of the word incredulous began grating on my senses, not to mention all the glaring, whining, cringing, grimacing, and her overwhelming need to append a "he said" or "she said" to almost every bit of dialog that transpired. (Surely, even truly young minds are able to keep up with the general flow of dialog). And let's not get started on the editing: You know the editor was asleep at the wheel, or either non-existent, when there's a glaring grammatical error within the first ten pages.

But, despite all of that, I enjoyed the book. Meyer is a wonderful storyteller. There was a cliffhanger at the end of each bite-sized chapter pressing the reader to continue on, if for no other reason than to see who else is glaring or grimacing at whom. The story also had a light-hearted comedic edge which played in its favor.

Rather than feeling as though I were trudging through a heavy piece of fantasy fiction, I was able to let my mind relax and float into the story as if I were watching some strangely intoxicating reality show about a clumsy teenage girl and a thoroughly confused vampire. In the end, despite their flaws and not fully understanding their logic or reasoning, I even enjoyed the characters Meyer created.

This is a novel you should pick up when you just want to shut off your brain for a little while and escape reality. Basically, you shouldn't try to read this novel with too serious an eye. Ideally, it should be read while curled up in your most comfortable outfit eating your favorite snack with the lights dimmed, and television and phone turned off.

Are you guys serious?
By Rachel Rooker
I don't get it. I just don't get it. I thought young adult fiction had hit its low point with Eragon, but apparently I was wrong. Bella Swan (literally, "beautiful swan," which should be a red flag to any discerning reader) moves to the rainy town of Forks, and the whining begins on page 1. She goes to live with her father Charlie, and is quickly established to be a mopey, ungrateful, self-pitying little toerag. Bella then attends her new school, which turns out to be an all-out caricature of high school with about zero (rounding up) grounding in real life. Her classmates' reaction can be summed up thusly: "OMG. NEW STUDENT. OMG YOU GUYS, NEW STUDENT. STARE AT HER, FOR SHE IS CLEARLY SUPERIOR TO US." Bella Sue is promptly adored by everyone in the school, except the mysterious Cullens, who spend their time brooding, being pretty, smoldering, being perfect, and sparkling. No, seriously. NO, SERIOUSLY. Bella meets Edward, the Culleniest of the Cullens, (meaning he is more perfect and emo than the rest of them,) they fall in love within thirty pages, (much of this time is spent in Bella's head going back and forth between "Does he like me?" "Does he hate me?" "Do I like him?" "Why does he hate me?" and on and on and on AND ON. That is, when she's not being a horrible snobby twit to the boys at school who show affection in genuinely sweet ways, i.e., not breaking into her house and watching her while she sleeps. While she sleeps. Not knowing that he's there. IN HER HOUSE.) The plot shows up somewhere in the last fifty pages, which involves an EVIIIIIILL vampire named James who wants to eat Bella. James is the only character I like.

I generally try to find something redeeming about books, but I honestly have nothing good to say about this drivel. Meyer writes as if the reader is an absolute idiot who has to be told every sing tiny little thing; we are never given the chance to interpret what's going on in the characters' heads. There is no mystery, no intrigue, no suspense. The characters themselves are cut-and-dried, stereotypical, and maddeningly unoriginal. Bella's (supposedly) the clever, beautiful heroine, Edward's the dark, brooding bad boy, James is... uh, the guy that wants to eat Bella. Meyer clearly wants Bella to be a strong female character, but the horrible sad truth is that she's pathetic. Bella follows Edward's every word religiously, never sticks up for herself, has no spine to speak of, plays Suzie Housewife to her father, and has no existence outside of her "romance" with Edward. On that note, let it be said that Nathaniel Hawthorne got more romance into a few lines about a rosebush than Meyer managed to cram into 400 pages. Edward and Bella's relationship consists almost entirely of staring at each other dewey-eyed and arguing about who's prettier (NO I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP.)

You know what? This could have been a great book if Meyer had focussed more on the relationship between the leads, (and treated it for what it is: unhealthy, creepy, pathetic, borderline psychopathic,) and less on how perfect Edward is (interesting note: the word "perfect" or related terms like "flawless" are used to describe Edward more than a hundred times. That's just bad writing, guys.) What burns me up most about this book is that Edward and Bella are obviously meant to portray the perfect couple. Yeah, I really want my hypothetical daughter to walk out on her family for a guy she barely knows, invite said guy to sleep in her bed, have absolutely no life outside of said guy, and turn into a sniveling wreck when this guy looks at her the wrong way. And I also really want my hypothetical son to break into his girlfriend's house and watch her sleep (SERIOUSLY, GUYS?) , abandon whatever life he has so he can stalk this girl, and be so possessive of her that he throws a fit whenever she so much as looks at someone other than him. And people think these two are good role models? WHAT. JUST WHAT.

This book really wouldn't bother me if it were being taken for what it is: a silly, sappy, shallow, juvenile, wish-fulfilling rag. The fact is, everyone is going on about how its literary merit rivals the frakking "Scarlet Letter" and how Bella Swan is the new Elizabeth Bennet (ARE YOU KIDDING ME?). "Twilight" should be rotting on some publisher's desk in a pile of rejection letters; not being lauded as the greatest novel since "Pride and Prejudice." I weep for literature.

The Antidote: Happiness for People Who Can't Stand Positive Thinking, by Oliver Burkeman

The Antidote is a series of journeys among people who share a single, surprising way of thinking about life. What they have in common is a hunch about human psychology: that it’s our constant effort to eliminate the negative that causes us to feel so anxious, insecure, and unhappy. And that there is an alternative “negative path” to happiness and success that involves embracing the things we spend our lives trying to avoid. It is a subversive, galvanizing message, which turns out to have a long and distinguished philosophical lineage ranging from ancient Roman Stoic philosophers to Buddhists. Oliver Burkeman talks to life coaches paid to make their clients’ lives a living hell, and to maverick security experts such as Bruce Schneier, who contends that the changes we’ve made to airport and aircraft security since the 9/11 attacks have actually made us less safe. And then there are the “backwards” business gurus, who suggest not having any goals at all and not planning for a company’s future.

Burkeman’s new book is a witty, fascinating, and counterintuitive read that turns decades of self-help advice on its head and forces us to rethink completely our attitudes toward failure, uncertainty, and death.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, November 2012: The you-can-do-it, life-is-one-big-smiley-face ethos of our contemporary culture has its value: Aggressive positivity helps many triumph over addiction, say, or build previously unimaginable businesses, even win elections and wars. But according to Oliver Burkeman, this relentless pursuit of happiness and success can also make us miserable. Exploring the dark side of the theories put forth by such icons as Norman Vincent Peale and Eckhart Tolle by looking to both ancient philosophy and current business theory, Burkeman--a feature writer for British newspaper The Guardian--offers up the counterintuitive idea that only by embracing and examining failure and loss and unhappiness will we become free of it. So in your next yoga class, try this: breathe deep, think unhappy thoughts--and feel your soul relax. --Sara Nelson

Review

“Burkeman's tour of the ‘negative path' to happiness makes for a deeply insightful and entertaining book. This insecure, anxious and sometimes unhappy reader found it quite helpful.” ―Hector Tobar, The Los Angeles Times

“Some of the most truthful and useful words on [happiness] to be published in recent years . . . A marvellous synthesis of good sense, which would make a bracing detox for the self-help junkie.” ―Julian Baggini, The Guardian

“The Antidote is a gem. Countering a self-help tradition in which ‘positive thinking' too often takes the place of actual thinking, Oliver Burkeman returns our attention to several of philosophy's deeper traditions and does so with a light hand and a wry sense of humor. You'll come away from this book enriched--and, yes, even a little happier.” ―Daniel H. Pink, author of Drive and A Whole New Mind

“Quietly subversive, beautifully written, persuasive, and profound, Oliver Burkeman's book will make you think--and smile.” ―Alex Bellos, author of Here's Looking at Euclid

“Addictive, wise, and very funny.” ―Tim Harford, author of The Undercover Economist

“What unites [Burkeman's] travels, and seems to drive the various characters he meets, from modern-day Stoics to business consultants, is disillusionment with a patently false idea that something as complex as the goal of human happiness can be found by looking in a book . . . It's a simple idea, but an exhilarating and satisfying one.” ―Alexander Larman, The Observer

“This is an excellent book; Burkeman makes us see that our current approach, in which we want happiness but search for certainty--often in the shape of material goods--is counterproductive.” ―William Leith, The Telegraph

“Fascinating . . . After years spent consulting specialists--from psychologists to philosophers and even Buddhists--Burkeman realised they all agreed on one thing: . . . in order to be truly happy, we might actually need to be willing to experience more negative emotions--or, at least, to learn to stop running so hard from them.” ―Mandy Francis, The Daily Mail

“Splendid . . . Readable and engaging.” ―British Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, The Times (London)

Saving Your Sanity
By Steven Haack
"The Antidote" is a perfect and powerful title because the knowledge in this book is medicine and a remedy for counteracting the poisonous effects of positive thinking. The information can also serve as preventive medicine for the future buyers of snake-oiled salesman. The knowledge in this book is definitely an example of the phrase "Buyer Beware."

British author and journalist, Oliver Burkeman is a freaking genius; maybe even a prophet, shedding old light in a new time and place. It is not because he adds something new to our body of knowledge; he is brilliant because he resurrects knowledge dating back to 3B.C. He also sheds light on American beliefs that I have long questioned. I owe Burkeman several times the price of the book.

He makes known what my American professors ignored. Burkeman expounds on a book called "Bright-sided: How Positive Thinking Is Undermining America" by Barbara Ehrenreich, August 3, 2010. Many of us Americans think we are so smart; but many have so much to learn from our "parent country." In my opinion, this book may even fall into the same effectiveness as Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave.”

By MLeland
I was expecting a severe dismantling of the usual personal development tools: positive thinking, goal setting, visioning, etc. Thankfully, in my opinion, the author didn't completely dismiss these tools. He did poke holes in them and offered a new way of thinking about them. An interesting read to be sure.

Don't drop, just refine your goals
By RodM
This is a well written, somewhat disguised self-help book on personal planning. It would deflect the reader from too much positive thinking. It recommends the dropping of goals that are not actually leading to happiness, and through awareness moving to more appropriate, timely or rewarding goals. As Kenny Rogers sang, "Know when to hold em, know when to fold em ... know when to walk away." The author also wisely suggests that one should sample possible activities that may frighten. That is, between the lines Burkeman says be bolder. Do sample the things on your avoid list.

But regrettibly, the author also suggests that one might discard goals, simply because they are part of excessive semi-modern positivity. This reader thinks that would be terribly wrong. To do so would be to live in random world, just doing the next thing, since that could be what your subconscious desires. This is the book's defense of Buddhist meditation, as I read it. While mumbling "Om," or counting breaths, one is supposedly free from goal obsessing, so that after his sitting he can move unconsciously into a successful course of action. No, this reader says that the Buddhist sitting, as an injection of mental peace, is great. But that's it for the sittings. To do more than just sit with one's life, one does best with goals, about which one best thinks optimistically, oh dear ... positively.

So this critic says, read Burkeman's book with enthusiasm, sampling its warnings about goal intensity and choice. But by all means, do keep, refine and pursue improved goals after reading ... properly allowing for alternatives, and sampling your feared dangers. Thus, you will as Spock said, "Live long and prosper." Oh, but wait, this is also in agreement with William Shatner (Capt. Kirk) who is cited as encouraging impossible levels of positivity in the first chapter of "The Antidote."

Chloroform: The Quest for Oblivion, by Linda Stratmann

Right up until the 19th century, physicians and philosophers regarded sleep as a state of near-oblivion in which there was no mental activity, a kind of halfway stage between wakefulness and death. For the Victorians, therefore, when anaesthesia was first practised, it was commonly seen as traumatic—for doctors were being asked to induce a condition looked upon as partial death. Viewed with suspicion, many feared that they would never wake again, or that they would lose their faculties on a permanent basis, even become insane. Yet, especially after Queen Victoria allowed its administration to her during childbirth, its use to block out pain became widespread. This engaging and entertaining book traces the social, medical and criminal history of chloroform, from early medical practices to create oblivion through the discovery of chloroform and its discovery, its use and misuse in the 19th century, to the present. Today chloroform is no longer used as an anaesthetic, but has a multitude of uses in industry and medical research, including a role in DNA profiling. A by-product of the chlorination of water, we inhale infinitesimal amounts of chloroform every time we have a shower.

Great historical novel, fascinating science.
By Husker Du
Well written, engrossing science history. I became aware of this while reading "Poisoner's Handbook". If you enjoyed that, and factual history like "Devil in the White City" you'll love this.

Chloroform: The Quest for Oblivion
By Jeff Defalque
This compact book is a spellbinding history of chloroform, from its discovery in 1831-2 to its present role in our industrial plants and our environment. It is, to my knowledge, the first and only historical survey of the famous anesthetic. The author has researched a prodigious number of sources, many of them little known. The book is written for laymen but physicians, especially anesthesiologists, will enjoy reading it and learn much from it.
The author clearly presents the controversies which surrounded chloroform from its birth on: who was its first discoverer; the debate between Boston & Edinburgh over its safety, as compared to that of ether; the medical and religious oppositions to its use in obstetrics (or even in surgery); the quarrel between the Scottish and English surgeons on its safe mode of administration; and the disputes over the mechanism of the instantaneous death that it not infrequently caused. All sides of the debates are fairly presented and soundly judged on the basis of facts gleaned in a vast literature.
The scientific and medical material is presented clearly and soberly, in a crisp, vivid, and lucid style. The author presents a fair judgment of a drug, which spared patients the horrors of the bite of the knife but could also kill with the speed of a thunderbolt.
The book also offers vivid biographic vignettes of the great pioneers of chloroform. Some of them, little known, such as Samuel Guthrie and Edward Lawrie beautifully come alive in the book.
Over the years chloroform was recommended for every physical and mental disease and the book includes many amusing stories about those medical fads. From its birth to our present days, chloroform was also used for wrongdoing & Mrs. Stratmann narrates at great length some famous criminal cases involving chloroform, which will delight every crime buff. No mystery writer could have presented with more verve and sense of suspense the stories of Adelaide Bartlett, W. Markand, Sir William Osler, WT Stead, HW Mudgett, and "Old Man" WM Rice.
Chloroform raised much clinical and scientific interest on the Continent, especially in Germany, though less so than in the UK. I hope that the author will delve more extensively with the story of chloroform in Continental Europe in her book's 2nd edition.
This work is a serious book on a difficult medical subject but its fluent, crisp and vivid style makes it a delight to read. I immensely enjoyed reading it and am sure that laymen & physicians who read it will share my pleasure. I highly recommend it to both.

The Second Great Anesthetic
By Rob Hardy
According to Linda Stratmann, "Descriptions and illustrations of surgery in the seventeenth to mid-nineteenth centuries are mainly a catalogue of unrelieved agonies." It is hard to disagree with this assessment. Patients were restrained on the operating table by strong orderlies and leather straps and given a cloth to bite on to help keep them quiet. Surgeons may have been skillful; they used the sharpest of knives to cut off limbs, for instance, with astonishing speed. They could not control pain except by getting it over with as quickly as possible. When the anesthetic properties of ether were discovered, it was a great boon to humanity. But Stratmann's book, _Chloroform: The Quest for Oblivion_ (Sutton) details the history of the second great anesthetic. It is a dramatic rise and fall story, told with detail and a sense of broader social history.

Ether worked wonderfully well, but it had disadvantages, especially its explosiveness. James Young Simpson, an obstetrician in Edinburgh, discovered the effects of chloroform. There were no experimental standards in place, and Simpson's procedure sounds simple and dangerous: he would get samples of any substance with a "breatheable vapour, inhale them from a tumbler, and make notes of his reactions." He enlisted friends as guinea pigs as well. Four days after being knocked out by chloroform in 1847, he used it successfully on an obstetric case. Though there is a legend that ministers denounced chloroform because taking pain away from childbirth was irreligious, Stratmann has not found documentation that this is so, although Simpson did get private letters along those lines.

Despite the frivolous objections, chloroform did have its bad effects on some patients as all medicines do. There was a long and emotional argument over whether it affected the heart or the respiration after doctors finally realized that some people were dying from it. Chloroform continued to be used until newer, safer agents began to be used in the 1950s. This surprising book shows that it was not just used for anesthesia, but also for general sedation, to combat seasickness, and even as fuel for steamer boats. In addition, it was used for criminal activities like murder and robbery, but it was not very successful for these (or for many of the other proposed uses), even though they did make good lurid stories for the Victorian press. The wide range of _Chloroform_ makes it an amusing history not only of an important aspect of medical science but of the society of the time.
