My late-twenties son and his fiance attended a pre-marriage seminar using this text, and I was curious, so I bought it. It is a very good primer for young people to sort out and identify areas of difference prior to marriage; best moderated by leaders with substantial marriage counseling experience to guide the discussions. It encourages communication and constructively working as one. It teaches critical thinking about what is important in marriage, recognizes positive and negative approaches to communicating and the benefits of working toward a positive outcome. It also identifies the progressive stages of deterioration in a marriage and how they are manifested.

I think it has potential as a resource to a young adults group or teen religious education teacher for discussion prompts. Teenagers are always curious about relationships, and what makes a good marriage or a poor one, i.e., 'how do you know someone would be a good person to marry?' This book would be a good source to initiate and manage a discussion with teens or young adults to give them a thoughtful awareness of what relationship good traits are and how to identify them, and what poor traits are and how to identify them.

A great reference and complement to Hull

Implementing Derivatives Models is a great reference for anyone who need to implement derivative models. The algorithms and the underlying ideas are clearly explained. Each model has a numeric example that you can use to check the results of your model. This really is almost a required reference for anyone building software derivative models (a group that seems to be rather small these days).

I used Implementing Derivative models along with Hull (Options, Futures, and Other Derivatives) for a graduate course I took. Hull writes for MBAs and the models in his book are implemented in Excel, which is, generally, a tool for those who cannot write software. Implementing Derivatives Models is a book for those who are able to implement software in languages like R, Mathlab or C++. Each model in the book includes pseudo-code.

I think that the book doesn't target any language is a feature, but for those looking for C++ algorithms it may be a bug. Unlike books like Numerical Methods in Finance with C++ the books usefulness doesn't depend on which language you are using.

I really can't think of any strong flaws. The book is dense and you have to read it carefully. However, it deals with complex models which require a lot of thought. Perhaps it could have covered issues of numerical convergence a bit more.

Even on the Kindle some of the diagrams were hard to read. Was disappointed to find a number of clock mechanisms and even something as simple as a chain and sprocket included, but overall it was great inspiration!

Very good engineering viewpoint to computer architecture

This text is suitable for introducing engineering undergrads to the topic of computer architecture. It treats the various topics in depth, especially as far as the implementation is concerned - an area which is frequently lacking in several CS textbooks on the topic. This book does, however, assume a good knowledge of digital logic design; also, certain topics (such as the algorithms for performing arithmetic) are explained in a clearer way in other textbooks. A major strongpoint in this text is the Control Unit design, including pipelined systems. I recommend this text to anyone who wants a clear picture of architecture from an implementation standpoint rather than a merely organizational one.

Having taking a computer architecture course at both undergraduate and graduate levels, in my opinion, "Computer Architecture : A Quantitative Approach" by John Hennessy is a much better choice than this text by John Hayes.

I used this book in a second year undergraduate class for Comp Arch. Absolutely horrible. Torture in print. It might be better suited for graduate students, even though the publisher suggests it can be used with undergrads. While it is packed with technical details, it doesn't work as a class text. I can't imagine a worse book to use for an undergrad class.
