Hans Ørberg’s Lingua Latina per se illustrata is the world’s premiere series for learning Latin via the Natural Method. Hans Henning Orberg (1920-2010) received his MA in English, French and Latin from the University of Copenhagen in 1946. He taught at various Danish high schools until 1963 and at the Grenaa Gymansium until 1988. From 1953 to 1961 he served on the staff of the Nature Method Institute, Copenhagen. He is the author of the Latin course "Lingua Latina secundum naturae rationem explicata" (1955-56); the course was revised in 1990-91, with a number of supplements, under the title "Lingua Latina per se illustrata". His books were published by Domus Latina, a publishing house he founded in Denmark, and they are distributed in the English speaking world by Focus Publishing.

A Wonderful First Course, but Not the Whole Banquet

While I love this book, the complaints of some of the negative reviewers have some truth in them. After a while, most adults will probably become frustrated with Familia Latina unless they are also using a more traditional text with a systematic presentation in English of the Latin grammar. But, nevertheless, Familia Latina is a great way to get a taste of Latin, a great tool to introduce a child who is not able to tolerate grammatical drills or master a systematic presentation of grammatical rules to the language, and a great reader to supplement other books and classwork. The second book in the series, Roma Eterna, makes a delightful reader for those who continue their study of Latin. Lingua Latina: Pars II: Roma Aeterna.

this system actually works - you learn Latin just as you would any other language and it stick's in your head. instead of memorizing endless endings you're reading prose. highly recommended for working on your own or with others.

Great for beginner, young and older.

Great book. Amazon also sells the companion MP3 files. Speaking and reading at the same time is very helpful.
This is a book that you can use for at least a year. Relax and enjoy.
