R. Shankar has introduced major additions and updated key presentations in this second edition of Principles of Quantum Mechanics. New features of this innovative text include an entirely rewritten mathematical introduction, a discussion of Time-reversal invariance, and extensive coverage of a variety of path integrals and their applications. Additional highlights include:

- Clear, accessible treatment of underlying mathematics

- A review of Newtonian, Lagrangian, and Hamiltonian mechanics

- Student understanding of quantum theory is enhanced by separate treatment of mathematical theorems and physical postulates

- Unsurpassed coverage of path integrals and their relevance in contemporary physics

The requisite text for advanced undergraduate- and graduate-level students, Principles of Quantum Mechanics, Second Edition is fully referenced and is supported by many exercises and solutions. The book’s self-contained chapters also make it suitable for independent study as well as for courses in applied disciplines.

Review
`An excellent text....The postulates of quantum mechanics and the mathematical underpinnings are discussed in a clear, succint manner.' - American Scientist, from a review of the First Edition

From the Back Cover

Reviews from the First Edition:

"An excellent text … The postulates of quantum mechanics and the mathematical underpinnings are discussed in a clear, succinct manner." (American Scientist)

"No matter how gently one introduces students to the concept of Dirac’s bras and kets, many are turned off. Shankar attacks the problem head-on in the first chapter, and in a very informal style suggests that there is nothing to be frightened of." (Physics Bulletin)

Reviews of the Second Edition:

"This massive text of 700 and odd pages has indeed an excellent get-up, is very verbal and expressive, and has extensively worked out calculational details---all just right for a first course. The style is conversational, more like a corridor talk or lecture notes, though arranged as a text. … It would be particularly useful to beginning students and those in allied areas like quantum chemistry." (Mathematical Reviews)

A very good book for learning QM by yourself
By P. chavan
I got this book after I started listening to the Leonard Susskind's QM lectures on Stanford's youtube channel and wanted a book that starts from the postulates and uses Dirac's notations. I found it easier to understand QM if we start from the postulates rather than wave mechanics. I have read everything in this book except for Scattering theory (chapter 19) and path integrals part II (chapter 21) and I have to say that this is an excellent book for people who want to learn QM on their own.

This book has a fantastic mathematical introduction in the first chapter that has all the math you will need. Second chapter has a nice recap of advanced classical mechanics, especially the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations. However, I have to say that some familiarity with Differential Equations, Linear Algebra and Hamiltonian mechanics (especially canonical coordinates and change of basis) is a pre-requisite for this book.

The chapter on Harmonic Oscillator is probably the best chapter in the book. It treats the problem in some detail and introduces some of the math tricks that will be repeatedly used in the rest of the book. Even with all this detail, it never feels terse. The chapter on Dirac Equation is also superb and I am glad it was included in the book.

Another good thing in this book is that some of the advanced topics are well-contained and also clearly marked. So, you can skip all of them on first read.

The exercies are quite easy and the difficult ones have nice hints on how to approach the problem. This is really helpful if you are learning QM on your own. Downside is that there aren't many difficult problems especially in chapters 5 and 7 where you feel the need to stretch your wings a little.

The only subject that I thought was not treated very well in this book was Irreducible Tensor Operators. I think that part needed a little more explanation and also some examples. Especially, what spherical basis is and what spherical operators (both Tensor and Vectors) are. The part where Shankar equates Tensor operator of rank 1 to a linear combination of some Vector operator is mind boggling. I understood this only after I read online lecture notes at some universities. It would not have been that bad but they are used again in dipole selection rules and it will drive you nuts if you don't understand it.

So, except for those two pages about tensor operators, this is an excellent book for learning QM yourself. The fact that there is only one small part that requires you to search the Internet is itself a big achievement for a book that is also a standard text book at many universities.

Quantum mechanics
By Russell J. Barry
I will make it real simple. It has been over a half of a year since I bought this book. When I first got it, it seemed really hard, you have to really read this book line for line. With the help of scham's outline, quantum mechanics and quantum mechanics demystified I got through it without a teacher. It now seems real easy and I cannot understand why I had trouble. One review says it breaks down after chapter seven. Well it does not. Only after I started doing quantum field theory did I start to understand why this book is written the way it is. Plain and simple this book prepares you for QFT. All other Quantum Mechanics books seem easy after going through this book. Only after doing QFT do some of the chapters in this book now make sense. The chapters starting with 10 are a preparation for QFT. A good Physics book is one that prepares one to go on to harder subjects. This book does just that. Read it slow and understand it step by step, I had to re-read some chapters 3-4 times. You need strong linear algebra and partial differential equations skills. Go on youtube MIT offers linear algebra and differential equations courses, free. OFT is hard but this book paved the way. You have to derive the equations along with the author and fill in the missing steps to really get the most from this book. Good luck, not really just really hard work.

Explains everything clearly--for better or worse
By B. Nartowt
The great strength of this book is that it explains quantum mechanics extremely clearly. The downside of this book is that....it spares no expanse of the book (676 pages, about 9 inches by 6 inches in dimension!). Some of the exercises are a joke, and are mostly completed in the problem statement. All things considered, however, I'm able to visualize separate -ket spaces, degenerate subspaces, rotation operators (Chapter 12 is a *superb* supplement that explains things that I simply did not understand at a first reading of Sakurai), the Wigner-Eckart theorem, tensor operators, etc. It has been a privilege to learn QM from this book...my only complaint is that I used it in a grad-level course, and the book really could be tackled by an undergraduate. Of course...there is the venerable Griffiths for the undergraduate...and *that* text's greatest strength is its expanse of clever exercises (and its weakness: the expanse of material *left to* the exercises).

I guess I'd recommend Shankar as a supplement to Griffiths, although I haven't had the experience of using the text as a stand-alone reference to understand another book.

So in summary...Shankar is a cure for any doubts or shakiness in your grasp of quantum mechanics, whereas most other texts (in QM and in physics in general) are a stage upon which to let your skills in grappling with *hard* uncertainty develop. (The extreme example of this, of course, seems to be Jackson's text).
