Mastering ArchiMate is a book about the ArchiMate� Enterprise Architecture Modeling Language, which is an open standard and a Registered Trade Mark of The Open Group. This book gives an introduction to the language and then goes on to show you many different patterns for its use. From Business to Infrastructure, from Risk & Security to Application Exploitation and Maintenance. The first edition was published in 2012 and quickly became widely used. The Open Group even pub- lished a white paper "ArchiMate, Understanding the Basics" that was almost literally taken from the ArchiMate Basics chapter of the first edition of this book. This second edition has twice the diagrams in a book roughly one and a half times the pages of the first edition. There are several new subjects, like linking ArchiMate to BPMN. It has been updated to ArchiMate 2.1. Gerben Wierda (1961) is Lead Architect of APG Asset Management, one of the largest Fiduciary Managers in the world. He has overseen the construction of one of the largest single ArchiMate models in the world to date. He holds an M.Sc. in Physics from the University of Groningen and an MBA from RSM Erasmus, Rotterdam.

Essential Book for Enterprise Architects

Mastering ArchiMate should be required reading for accelerating the knowledge and skills of serious Enterprise Architects. I foresee incorporating this book as a required textbook for my graduate course in Enterprise Architecture and for the training of professional architects. Of course, it would follow material on overall Enterprise Architecture because it helps explain in concrete ways how transformation can be realized across the business, architecture, and infrastructure layers.
There is no other book that comes close to it in terms of narrating and illustrating, with very practical scenarios and examples, how modeling can bring rigor to transformation initiatives. I would have liked to see more development of the Motivation and the Implemenation and Migration Extensions, but I really appreciate that the book includes a primer on BPMN, as well as showing how to use ArchiMate for Risk and Security.

Well worth the money.

I have been looking a long time for a decent ArchiMate book. So many others are all theory, but this book provides detail rational on how to model in Archimate using real life practicsl examples. I am extremely pleased, except illistrations rae a bit hard to read withoout a magnification. Well worth the money.

A highly useful book

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in really learning to understand and use ArchiMate.
The book contains both very useful practical modeling patterns, and also highly valuable insights and explanations regarding enterprise architecture and modeling in general. For example, via discussions around topics such as: abstraction, the role of principles/guidelines in EA, logic vs. practicality, and the concept of "meaning".
I very much liked the author's style of combining both theory and practice in an explicit and honest way, discussing also the limits of ArchiMate and the pros and cons of proposed patterns.
