This is undoubtedly the best book I have read on creativity.

This is undoubtedly the best book I have read on creativity.
This is because the book is based on a solid study as opposed to suppositions.
It provides interesting insights onto the work habits of some major architects and their personalities which are rarely covered elsewhere.
One of the most interesting results was that when architects were asked to name their major influences, the person mentioned in most books about them was not in the list. It also explains how innovation is not a group activity because groups actually stifle the creativity of individuals.
The origins of personality tests in Nazi Germany is an interesting insight.
The last chapter about creativity and its traits is a fascinating read.
There is a lot of really useful information in the book. It took me one week to read, and then another week to reread two of the most interesting chapters.
There is a video on YouTube where Jon Cleese discusses creativity and mentions this book.

The excellent documentation of a two-year personality study in the late 1950's, evaluating the cause and skill assessment of "creativity" used by the world's most revered architects of the mid-twentieth century who participated in the study.

Given that my architect father was one of the people studied, and that I myself had written something about the study, I read this book with great care. I think Mr. Serraino has done a masterful job. Interestingly, having an architect and historian summarize the research has yielded a much more vivid and thought provoking delivery than the original, somewhat dry, research papers produced by the study's authors! Also, sixty years on, Serraino has been able to publish comments that give insight into what these architects thought about each other, and details of their development that are much more compelling than the generalizations that necessarily had to be published at the time. If you are interested in creativity but not psychology or architecture you will enjoy this. If you are interested in modern architecture but not the other two, you will enjoy this, if your are interested in valiant efforts by psychologists to study a slippery subject you will enjoy this. I heartily recommend it.
